[NM] Notion as a Curiosity Engine 🧠

Notion as a Curiosity Engine

Hello, there, Notion fan.

It's been a bit. Marie and I have had a busy autumn so far. We spoke at Tiago Forte's Second Brain Summit in Los Angeles and then we made another trip to San Francisco for Marie to speak at the Make with Notion conference at the end of October.

If you've ever done a conference speaking gig before, you might be aware of how much time and energy it takes to prepare, so we've been in recovery mode this month.

However, we're pretty happy with the outcome as our talk on Digital Permaculture (slides) looks like it might become a book next year. And we're delighted that the replay of Marie's talk from the Make conference is available to watch on Notion's YouTube channel. It wasn't streamed live, so many folks didn't get to check it out!

In this session Marie does a live walkthrough of some of her journaling, habit-tracking, and wellness systems. I'm pretty biased, but I think it was the best session of the conference.

Principles of Dashboarding Masterclass

After lots of great feedback on this Masterclass from the Notion Mastery program, we decided to bundle up this replay and make it an entry-point into Notion Mastery live trainings. The two hour replay comes with a teamspace building kit.

In this workshop, we explore the core components of Databases, Views, and Dashboards and learn how to build dashboards from scratch, utilizing Notion’s templates, and mastering the art of designing component-driven workflows.

Templates are great. Building from excellent dashboard-building fundamentals with kits is better.

One of my clients watched this replay and told me, "If I had implemented your system from the beginning, it would have saved me so much time and headache." 🧠

Note: if you already have Notion Mastery access, you've got access to this masterclass already!

Back on YouTube

Speaking for myself, I find video editing uninteresting and bothersome. I enjoy sharing technical training on Notion, but the process makes me twitchy. I decided recently that I'm going to just start "going live" and recording and uploading the results. No edits, no intro fluff, no fancy studio, just raw "how-to" on technical stuff.

With that in mind, I'm back to YouTube with a new video. Did you know you can use the new Formula Automations to auto-title your Journal pages?

"Bluesky is more Twitter than X"

This quote above by our friend Joel Hooks rings really true. As an early (2008) user of Twitter, Bluesky feels like early Twitter for tech and web people. So, yep, we've joined the tech peoples' migration over to Bluesky. It's just so much more fun over there.

Complete with an open-source codebase, amazing API, and control over moderation and publishing (if you're daring enough to do the work), it's the place where technical-minded folks are having fun with online friends again.

You can follow us there if you like. Both of us have made the decision to cease publishing on X so that'll be the best place to follow and ask us public questions about Notion and other fun topics.

Hope you have a great December. Be well.

Productive by Nature Can permaculture thinking help us better work with our natural creative rhythms? Hey Reader, Have you ever noticed how some days ideas flow effortlessly, while on others, extracting a single coherent thought feels like pulling teeth? For years, I approached this inconsistency as a problem to be solved. A personal failing, if you will. I'd force myself to stick to rigid schedules, push through creative blocks with sheer willpower, and feel guilty when my output didn't...

Digital Spring Cleaning A Digital deep clean can be a way to find a slice of calm in a chaotic times. Hey Reader, Last week, just as I was getting ready to dive into a productive work session, I noticed my Mac’s spinning beach ball of death. My computer was lagging badly. Apps were misbehaving—my screenshot software wouldn’t open, Adobe suite was crashing, and I discovered my email hadn’t been syncing for days. Everything was either crawling along or completely frozen. I couldn’t access the...

Happy Valentine's Day, from Lumon

A cheeky gift In this newsletter: a Severance-themed Valentine's gift, two Notion videos, and a new podcast episode. Hey Reader, This week I'm sending you some cheeky Severance-inspired valentines! Feel free to share these with your work besties, your favorite “innies” and “outies,” or anyone who appreciates a good workplace dystopia reference. After all, nothing says “I value our professional relationship” quite like a Valentine’s Day card inspired by a show about corporate-mandated...
